House in Monterey, IN - a photo on Flickriver

Saw this house listed in This Old House magazine as a place needing to be rescued in nearby Monterey, IN. The magazine reports that it was built in 1867 and despite the ornate exterior, the interior is fairly plain. It is for sale for $35,000 which is remarkable except that you have to want to live in Monterey which is 40 miles from South Bend. I had to see the place so we drove out there and it was certainly worth the trip.
Incidentally, This Old House Magazine lists one of these kind of places once a month. It is the first thing I look at when I get a new copy. A lot of the houses are looking pretty well worn and all are at bargain basement prices. I also saw this one listed at historicproperties.com.
