Two Houses in Víkarbyrgi, Suðuroy, Faroe Islands

These photos were taken on the 20th of June 2009 when I went on a hiking trip from the village Sumba to Víkarbyrgi. The population of Sumba is around 250. There is no population in Víkarbyrgi or Hamrabyrgi anymore. According to Hagstova.fo (Faroe Statistics), one person still lives in Víkarbyrgi, but I know that nobody lives there. There are very few houses there now, just a few, I think there are five and some boathouses. It is a beautiful place and the last place in Suðuroy which got a road connection. But the road came to late, just a few elderly or middle aged people lived there then, it was in 1977. The view from the top of the mountain just south of Víkarbyrgi was just great. We could see Lítla Dímun and a part of Stóra Dímun (small islands just north east of Suðuroy) and a large part of the island. The weather was nice on this trip, the grass was very green and the sea so blue, a wonderful excursion. We had a guide with us, a man from Sumba. We were around 20 people. Víkarbyrgi is the norther part of the earlier settlement and Hamrabyrgi is in the southern part of the valley. A river separates the two place names.
