Dark-edged Bee-fly

            A Dark-edged Bee-fly Bombylius major) in our Staffordshire garden. This shot shows the characteristic wing markings that give it its name. 

The larvae of this fly are parasitoids of various ground-nesting mining bee species. The adults flick eggs towards the bee nests whilst in flight.
