But it’s been a busy week for so-called royal experts. Endless chatter and wild unsubstatianted claims about the alleged "hard work" of the royals, and plenty of speculation about Charles’s health. Since the UK currently has a monarchy, the health of King Charles raises fundamental questions about the nations constitution and democracy. Despite this, the BBC has been excelling itself with its tired platitudes and deferential coverage of the monarchy since Charles was diagnosed with cancer.

Complaints about the Boxing Day documentary which followed Charles throughout 2023 forced the BBC to respond, and to list the programme as one of the most complained about that week.

The monarchy is corrupt, unaccountable, undemocratic and secretive. It stands against the UK's most cherished principles. No country has democratically reintroduced monarchy and it’s fast losing support where it still exists. We know that in the UK, monarchy helps to centralise power and robs us of the chance of real reform and proper checks and balances in our constitution.

The monarchy itself – the royal household – abuses public office for private gain. That the situation has been normalised and legitimised by government doesn’t make it acceptable.
