An airport for the birds -- 2 - a photo on Flickriver

            For the past decade the abandon Beltsville Airport has been my spot for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count.  I walk the old airport and count birds.  The airport’s history is hidden in mystery.  It has even been suggested that the airport was used by the CIA in the past – but I can not find any real evidence to back up that factoid.  From what I can tell the airport likely originated in 1930-1931 as an emergency landing site for commercial aircraft.  By 1936 commercial aircraft were so efficient that intermediate landing fields were abandon.  The airfield got its second life in 1941 during the Roosevelt Administration.  There is some indication that the airfield was secretly constructed to serve as an escape for President Roosevelt during wartime -- if he needed to flee from the White House.  The airport was closed in 1947 because of “due to the persistent bird hazard to aircraft operation there”.   Whatever its true history is, it is mine for one day a year.  Today I found 44 species of birds at the airport during this year's Christmas bird count.  Beltsville Agricultural Research Center, Maryland
