9955 Tui feeding on Persimmon Johnsonville Wellington 21-06-22

            I recently set up a winter feed station for the Silvereyes that visit me. I began using Kiwifruit and apples, followed by fat balls made from an online recipe. At first only the Silvereyes came to feed but were soon joined by a Tui and later a flock of Starlings, some Sparrows and blackbirds. Food disappeared very rapidly so I began threading string through apples, persimmons and Kiwifruit as I found it somewhat deterred the larger birds who found it difficult to perch on the fruit and feed. I still put out one fruit (Persimmons work well), speared on a small cut-away branch and hope the Tui gets a feed before the Starlings and other flocking birds arrive and demolish my offerings.
The object poking out of the Tui's mouth is its tongue coated with persimmon flesh.
FYI: Tui are nectar feeders, hence the very long tongue
