            This is me with our dear friend Dorothy at my son's wedding in 2011. In recent years, Dorothy wasn't a big fan of having her picture taken so this is one of the last photos we have of her. It was taken by my wife, Gloria. I love this picture because Dorothy's expression combines elements of a defiant "I don't want to have my picture taken" with a slight smile that hints at "but I'm glad you're taking it." 

Dorothy passed away in the early part of 2015 at the tender age of 100. Yes, she was born in 1914 just one month after the beginning of WWI. We are grateful to have been able to help her celebrate her 100th birthday in the nursing home last August. We are also grateful that we were able to spend four and one half hours with her just before her passing. But most of all, we are grateful that, through the years, our relationship  evolved from friendly neighbours in 1974 to very close friends after Dorothy's mother passed in 1978 leaving her as the only surviving member of her family. After we bought our home 1982, we lost a neighbour but the friendship continued to grow with regular weekly visits to her apartment, then to the hospital and finally to the nursing home where she had resided since 2006. Unfortunately, my stroke in 2013 necessitated a reduction of  those weekly visits to bi-weekly visits as we tried to deal with my own medical crisis. In addition, except for the last couple years when she had become increasingly incapacitated, there were very few Christmas', Easters, Thanksgiving Days and birthdays since 1980 that Dorothy had not celebrated the day with a meal in our home. Her favourite meal? Gloria's turkey with all the trimmings of course.  :)

So why am I writing all this? Perhaps it is my own form of therapy as we prepare for Dorothy's internment tomorrow. But I prefer to think of it as my tribute to a lady who was not known to many people but who regularly told me as I was leaving that true friends are a real blessing in her life. That recurring message is the way that I want to remember Dorothy for the rest of my life.
