The reason this Fresnel lens is split is because a double flash plus the period is how this lighthouse was distinguished from others along the coast. This large lens floated on a mercury bath and was rotated by weight driven clockwork. The metal shaft you see in the previous photo of the spiral staircase was where the weight descended to spin the lens. The lighthouse keeper had to crank the weight it back up every few hours throughout the night.

I don't think this photo is quite as appealing as the first, but I added it because it provides another view of this historical lens.
