Disinformation – “Closed Circuit” [video document] – HEADPHONES ESSENTIAL

Very brief documentation of the soundcheck for “Closed Circuit” - the kinetic audio installation by art project Disinformation, exhibited at Shatwell Farm, Yarlington, Somerset, July to August 2021 (NB: headphones essential). “Closed Circuit” was installed at Shatwell Farm as part of the “Sounds & Shapes” exhibition - an exploration of geometric language, featuring artworks by Disinformation, Denman & Gould and Lucy or Robert, curated by Matchett & Page and hosted by Drawing Matter. Soundcheck date 19 May 2021.

“Closed Circuit” is a highly immersive and hypnotic architectural sound installation, which is created by oscillating the steel shell of a near-perfectly circular, disused former grain silo with low-frequency sine-waves, thereby transforming the (massive) structure into what may well have been, certainly one of, if not THE world’s largest loudspeakers.

The video depicts (in order) the “Closed Circuit” exhibition poster (featuring artwork by Denman & Gould), the relevant section of the “Sounds & Shapes” exhibition guide (see links below for high-res version), video footage of the actual soundcheck, and one triangular block from the artwork “Formation 2” by Denman & Gould.

The “Closed Circuit” installation was similar in execution (if not scale) to the “Language [as] Meta-Technology” exhibit at White Box Gallery, London, July 2019 - “a fully automated, medically sterile and autonomous kinetic audio installation”, set-up during the Covid pandemic, which also transformed the White Box Gallery window into the diaphragm of a loudspeaker.

In this way “Closed Circuit” and “Language [as] Meta-Technology” are notable for exploring the possibilities of haptic architecture, for exploring the TACTILE properties of architectural sound art. Many visitors to “Sounds & Shapes” experienced “Closed Circuit” by FEELING the (intense) vibrations in this (literally) heavy metal.
