F-1 Engines, Saturn V - a photo on Flickriver

Here's the last of my Saturn V pictures from last weekend's visit to Space Center Houston.

These nozzles form the business end of the first stage of the Saturn V. Five Rocketdyne F-1 engines fired for 168 seconds producing about 7.5 million pounds of thrust and accelerating the rocket to 5300mph before first stage separation. The center motor was fixed but the outer 4 nozzles were gimballed to allow for steering. To limit acceleration, the center engine actually shut down 26 seconds earlier than the other four.
