Flickriver

The Paragon, Bath

            1762-75 by Thomas Warr Atwood and Joseph Axford, stonemason. Limestone ashlar. Three storeys with attics and basements. Continuous coped parapet, cornice, first floor sill band and ground floor platband, cornices to first floor windows flanking central pedimented windows, cornices over doors to right of each house. Formerly with six/six-pane sash windows. Mansard roofs.

Nos 28 to 32 were demolished by the Bath Blitz of 25/26 April 1942 and are now restored, vertical toothing evident. This is reputed to be the first consciously designed and "crescent" of houses in Britain, but it does no more than follow the existing roadline. Nos 1-30 Royal Crescent was designed earlier, but building began here first. In 1801, Jane Austen and her family stayed at No.1 with her uncle and aunt.
