Dundee West Church, Dundee - a photo on Flickriver

            By local architect James Hutton, 1884. Decorated gothic church, cruciform-plan in prominent position with tall spire. Rubble-built with notable ashlar details, carving by Mr Bremner of Broughty Ferry.  Central 4-light window with rose and heads of Luther, Knox and Chalmers (first Moderator of Free Church) in carved tympanum. 3-light window below under projecting gablets. Doors either side, carved tympana within gablets with cross finials, carved animals and birds. Lancets with flowing tracery above to right narrow buttressed bay with gablet and pinnacles crowning the buttresses. Lower facetted-roofed extension to right. Centre gable with pierced parapet.  Tower square at base, louvred belfry lancets, pinnacles and gargoyle spouts at base.

Combines the congregations of St John's, St Mark's and Ryehill Churches all along Perth Road, with furnishings from each church.  Originally St John’s Free Church and opened 14 February 1884.    Architect James Hutton received a fee of £20 for his services.  

James Hutton was born in Dundee about 1853. He was articled to David Mackenzie in Dundee in c.1870 and commenced independent practice at 62 Commercial Street in 1880. In 1882 he won the competition for St John's Free Church, Dundee and designed Montpelier House for the Town Clerk, Sir Thomas Thornton.  Hutton drowned in a rescue attempt while on holiday in Montrose on 11 August 1901. Earlier that year he had entered into a partnership with Edward Tough who continued the practice.
