Liberton Kirk, Edinburgh - a photo on Flickriver

            Gothic church by the respected Edinburgh architect James Gillespie Graham, 1815.  Rectangular plan with a 3-stage tower. Crenellated parapet, cruciform finials to gables. Typical of Gillespie Graham, each elevation is symmetrical.  

Built on the site of an earlier building which was burned and demolished. Although there is evidence that a Celtic chapel existed here in the ninth century, the original site for a chapel at Liberton was granted by King David I in the Great Charter of Holyrood, signed in 1143.

James Gillespie Graham was born in 1776.  He specialised in Gothic churches and castle-style country houses which are symmetrical but with a picturesque outline. Near the end of his career his houses became more Baronial. 

He formed an association with the younger Pugin. It is said that he befriended him when Pugin was ship-wrecked off the coast at Leith. Pugin seems to have valued the friendship and was painted with a pair of compasses given to him by Gillespie Graham. Pugin in-turn assisted him in providing drawings based on authentic Gothic sources. 

Gillespie Graham made occasional designs in the classical style, notably in the Moray estate in Edinburgh and is an outstanding piece of urban planning.

Gillespie Graham died in Edinburgh on 21 March 1855 after a long illness.
