5029 Nunney Castle near Vellow 5th October 2013

            Between the 3rd and 6th of October 2013 the West Somerset Railway has been running its annual Autumn Steam Gala. This year the gala has been marking the 150th anniversary of two railways which eventually merged to create the Cambrian Railways Company. All the stations along the line have been renamed for the gala with names of stations associated with the Cambrian Railways and the engines that have been running have been of the classes which were associated with the Cambrian Railways after they were absorbed into the the Great Western Railways or GWR.

This picture shows the 'Castle Class' engine 5029 'Nunney Castle' heading the 14:45 service from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead on 5th October 2013 as it passed near Vellow. Actualy if you look  closely at this picture you will see that for the duration of the Gala the engine was running in the guise of the long since scrapped 5026 'Criccieth Castle' .

From 1923 to 1965 the 'Castles' could be found at the head of express trains between London and the West Country and Wales. 5029 was built in 1934 and takes its name from a small castle in Somerset. It spent most of its mainline career working from Old Oak Common shed in London until it move to Worcester. Toward the end of the steam era it came to the West Country with time at Newton Abbot and Plymouth. It was withdrawn from service in 1965.
