This is the entrance to the college St John's, founded in 1511 by Lady Margaret Beaufort. It is her coat of arms that is held up by the two mythological animals known as Yale (also known as Centicore, Wikipedia informs me. I did not know about this creature before today) .The creature was an heraldic animal used by the Beaufort family, and since the time of Lady Margaret, who was the mother of king Henry VII, it was used by the British royal family. The big, crowned flower to the left is the red (yes, red) Lancaster rose. And the man depicted on top of it all is, of course, St John the Evangelist himself.
