Moss on a tree stump in the forest - a photo on Flickriver

            By now, this forest will be covered in snow, but last week it was a fairyland of life and bright colors. Electric green moss draped itself over every stump and fallen tree. 

Mosses are nonflowering plants. Those red stalks you see have a capsule at the top containing spores, which is one way mosses reproduce. 

I have never really paid much attention to this life form before, and now I am awed and overwhelmed by the amount of information available. I feel like the hour or two I spent in this forest has radically changed my life, because now I realize how much I don't know about the natural world around me. I feel like a child again, embarking on a great adventure of discovery.
