SP 2638 - Anaheim CA - 01/26/77 - a photo on Flickriver

            Back in the 1970s, Anaheim, California, was a hub of activity on the Southern Pacific, with locals departing for a variety of jobs:  South to Costa Mesa (and the L.A. Times printing plant), east to Marlboro, west to Los Alamitos, west and south to Huntington Beach and west and northwest to Paramount.  On January 26, 1977, SW1500 2638 was hauling its train down Olive Street on its way south.  The cars curving in the distance are still transitioning from running down the center of Santa Ana Street, and the conductor on the steps of the caboose is keeping an eye on them.  There was still a fair amount of agriculture in Orange County at this time, as evidenced by the orange grove on the east side of Olive.  (Today that side of the street is a row of condominiums.)  It is hard for automobiles driving down the street to miss this train, thanks to SP's iconic Gyralights (to the left, with the headlight to the right), which gave their engines a lot of visibility - even in broad daylight - as they rotated.
