iX - Castelo - Ala Poente ! - a photo on Flickriver

Caros Amigos, inicio hoje a publicação de algumas fotos da cidade da minha naturalidade. É uma pequena cidade carregada de história e na qual existem alguns monumentos, que justificam a vossa visita, alguns dos quais poderão conhecer através das minhas fotos !!!

A cidade de Montemor-o-Novo - sede de concelho, povoação de origem muito antiga, situava-se inicialmente na parte interior da muralha do Castelo, expandindo-se posteriormente pela encosta virada a norte, onde actualmente se localiza.
O concelho recebeu forais dos reis D.Sancho I (1203) e de D.Manuel (1503) e teve um importante papel no combate à ocupação castelhana (1580 - 1640) e durante as invasões francesas (início do séc. XIX).
A época do apogeu de Montemor-o-Novo foram os séculos XV e XVI, em que à prosperidade trazida pelo comércio se aliava o facto de a corte permanecer por largos períodos em Évora, o que tornava a vila palco frequente de acontecimentos políticos de relevo, com a realização de cortes e a permanência do rei no Paço dos Alcaides.

Em Montemor, em 1496, tomou D.Manuel I a decisão histórica de mandar descobrir o caminho marítimo para a Índia, durante os conselhos gerais que se realizaram na cidade.. !!!

The Montemor-O-Novo town- headquarters of concelho, population of very old origin, initially placed in the interior part of the wall of the Castle, becoming enlarged themselves later for the turned hillside the north, where currently it bes situated. Concelho received Dos Reis D.Sancho I charter (1203) and from D.Manuel (1503) and had an important paper in the combat to the Castilian occupation (1580 - 1640) and during the French invasions (beginning of séc. XIX).
