Cathédrale de Cefalù, Sicile, Italie

            La cathédrale, qui date de 1131, a été commencée dans le style normand, l'île de Sicile ayant été conquise par les Normands en 1091. Selon la tradition, le bâtiment a été érigé après un vœu fait au saint Sauveur par le roi de Sicile, Roger II, après qu'il eut réchappé d'une tempête sur la plage de la ville. Le bâtiment aux allures de forteresse se dresse, vu de loin, comme une énorme masse juchée au sommet de la cité médiévale. Il constitue également un puissant témoignage de la présence normande.
La cathédrale est précédée d'un parvis à grandes terrasses (appelé turniali), qui était à l'origine un cimetière. Selon la tradition, il a été créé avec de la terre apportée de Jérusalem, ayant la particularité de provoquer la momification rapide des cadavres.

La façade est caractérisée par la présence de deux grosses tours normandes, avec des fenêtres à meneaux, surmontées chacune de petits clochers ajoutés au XVe siècle. Les deux clochers sont différents : l'un est de plan carré entouré de merlons en forme de flammes, symbolisant l'autorité de la mitre papale, l'autre a un plan octogonal, avec des merlons gibelins, symbolisant le pouvoir royal et temporel.

Le portique du XVe siècle est à trois arches, les deux arches extérieures soulignées et soutenues par quatre colonnes, avec des nervures voûtées. Sous le portique s'ouvre la Regum Porta (porte Royale), avec un portail de marbre finement décoré, flanqué de peintures murales.

The cathedral, which dates from 1131, was started in the Norman style, the island of Sicily having been conquered by the Normans in 1091. According to tradition, the building was erected after a vow made to the Holy Savior by the king of Sicily, Roger II, after he had escaped from a storm on the city beach. The fortress-like building stands, seen from a distance, like a huge mass perched on top of the medieval city. It is also a powerful testimony to the Norman presence.
The cathedral is preceded by a square with large terraces (called turniali), which was originally a cemetery. According to tradition, it was created with earth brought from Jerusalem, having the particularity of causing rapid mummification of corpses.
The facade is characterized by the presence of two large Norman towers, with mullioned windows, each surmounted by small bell towers added in the 15th century. The two bell towers are different: one has a square plan surrounded by flames in the shape of flames, symbolizing the authority of the papal miter, the other has an octagonal plan, with gibelins, symbolizing royal and temporal power.
The 15th century portico has three arches, the two external arches underlined and supported by four columns, with vaulted ribs. Under the portico opens the Regum Porta (Royal gate), with a finely decorated marble portal, flanked by murals.
