▶ "Lobelia cardinalis —commonly known as Cardinal Flower or Scarlet Lobelia— is a species of flowering plant in the bellflower family (Campanulaceae), native to the Americas, from southeastern Canada, through southeast US and Mexico, into northern Colombia. It grows along streams, springs, swamps, and in low wooded areas.

Lobelia cardinalis is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows up to 4 feet tall (1.2 m). The flowers are usually vibrant red, deeply five-lobed, up to 1½ inches (4 cm). They are produced in an erect raceme [flowers with short stalks along the shoots that bears the flowers] up to 28 inches tall (70 cm) during the summer to fall. Forms with white (f. alba) and pink (f. rosea) flowers are also known."
