not that hagia sofia - a photo on Flickriver

            It would seem most major cities in the Eastern Orthodox world have a Church of Hagia Sofia, that is, Holy Wisdom.  Thessaloniki is no different, as its example is ancient, dating back long before Ottoman rule and having survived the caliphate via conversion to a mosque in the interim, as did most.  This was no doubt facilitate by its age, for rather than the cruciform design familiar today, like most of the earliest churches, it was a simple rectangular design with a dome, and could with little difficulty be refashioned as a mosque.  A few patches of roses were planted in a bed in front, all of which were abloom:  though the season in the Valley of the Roses had not yet begun, it was at least 5 degrees warmer on the Aegean Coast.
