Extracting a deep lake sediment record for the Lake Junín Drilling Project

In July and August of 2015, I was part of a team of scientists stationed at Lake Junín, one of the few lakes in the tropical Andes that is hundreds of thousands of years old. Because it's so ancient, the sediments in the lake (which have been continuously depositing for all this time) preserve a record of past ice age cycles that may span 100,000-200,000 years!

So, we spent two months in the beautiful Central Andes with a giant floating barge, drilling into mud and extracting in-tact sediment cores for scientific study. By looking at these sequentially deposited layers of mud, we can reconstruct the past changes in climate observed here and the impacts these changes had on the surrounding vegetation, megafauna, glaciers, and even humans. With this information, we'll be better able to understand what will happen to this region and elsewhere in the changing climate of our future.
