57009 Norwich

            A very welcome sight in Norwich - with the vast majority of West Coast-operated charters using the fleet of maroon Class 47s, seeing traction in a different livery is always welcome. 57009 had arrived on the rear of 1Z80 1638 from Worcester Shrub Hill, the return of the Worcester Steam Express operated by Railway Touring Company; the 57 was added at Humberstone Road near Leicester, replacing Black Five 44871. 47848 was on the front from Humberstone Road.

57009 has been painted into original BR green livery, carrying the G.J.CHURCHWARD nameplate, carried from March 1979, replacing the original GEORGE JACKSON CHURCHWARD plates from 1965, numbered D1664. As 47079, the Brush Type 4 was one of four class members repainted into Great Western green in 1985 as part of the GWR150 celebrations, gaining replacement GWR-style brass nameplates.

In 2000 47079 was rebuilt as 57009, gaining a replacement General Motors engine for intermodal services with Freightliner. All twelve Class 57/0s moved to DRS, with West Coast acquiring the GM loco for use of charters.
