Chenille de l'Écaille du séneçon (Tyria jacobaeae)

            Les chenilles de l'Écaille du séneçon  sont toxiques et en annoncent la couleur : parées de jaune et de noir, leurs rayures rappellent celles des guêpes. On dit de ces couleurs qu'elles sont prémonitrices, ou aposématiques : elles indiquent à un potentiel prédateur que les chenilles ne sont pas bonnes à manger.
Les Séneçons, les Tussilages et les Pétasites, plantes-hôtes de notre écaille, contiennent des alcaloïdes pyrrolizidiniques, substances qu'elles produisent pour se défendre contre les herbivores. Les chenilles, en consommant ces plantes, deviennent toxiques à leur tour et prennent un goût désagréable pour les prédateurs.
La mortalité est cependant élevée chez les jeunes chenilles, qui n'ont pas encore beaucoup ingéré de substances toxiques. Elles sont alors la proie de divers arthropodes, comme les fourmis ou les réduves et autres punaises. Vous pouvez prendre cette chenille dans vos mains sans danger : elle ne possède pas de poils urticants. En revanche, elle est toxique et il est donc déconseillé d'essayer de la manger...
