Driving on the Dunlawton Bridge - a photo on Flickriver

            The Dunlawton Bridge spans the Halifax River, and is the southernmost bridge in the greater Daytona Beach area. It's a tall one, and the view coming across from the top is pretty. This bridge connects the City of Port Orange on the mainland, with the City of Daytona Beach Shores on the beach side. It's about 7 miles south to the Ponce Inlet area, where many of my photos have been taken. A right turn onto A-1-A, seen in the distance, leads to the Inlet, and a left turn leads into the Daytona Beach and Ormond Beach areas.

Highway A-1-A runs the length of Florida, with detours in some areas. For instance, the inlet divides Ponce Inlet from New Smyrna Beach, and there is no bridge spanning the water there, so A-1-A ends, but picks up again on the other side, although to reach it, you have to go 7 miles north and take THIS bridge back to the mainland, and then cross back over another in New Smyrna. It does the same things in areas to the south. While this sounds terribly inconvenient, it is a godsend for those who live in the inlet and beach areas of New Smyrna, as the steady traffic would make the homes much less desirable. It's an area that caters heavily to tourism, but there is still respect for the residents, and also, the wildlife living in the dune areas, which would be harmed were another large bridge to be built. This would pose way more problems than it might solve.

I took this shot through a car window on my birthday, as Don Gentry was driving, bringing me to the Marine Science Center in Ponce Inlet. It's hard to imagine that was over two months ago already! Time sure flies!
