Old Church Grand Gulf, Mississippi - a photo on Flickriver

            A very old abandoned church at Grand Gulf, Mississippi. Imaged around noon on May 20, 2008. The church has been overgrown in poison oak and sumac vines and has blended into the woods. The church steeple still remains at the top of its belfry. The windows are gone. The front steps are only remanants. The floor inside is about half intact near the back of the church. It is sagging in the middle. I retired from the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in July 2008 which is located just a few miles down the road. The town of Grand Gulf is nothing more than a few houses and mobile homes located around a street that forms a square. Grand Gulf was the site of a civil war battle. The remains of Fort Cobun are located a short distance away. The fort overlooked the infamous gulf in the Mississippi river where sometimes steam boats could get stuck in a giant whirlpool and go round and round in that section of the river. There was a port and railroad located at this old town in 1865.

The town of Grand Gulf is almost forgotten. If it were not for the civil war park near by, it probably would be covered over completely now. There are only  a handful of people who live there now.  The back roads around he county are dotted with little churches the size of this one. There are also many hunting camps near by.  The deer popluation in this area is many times the human population.
