Broken | Monongahela Cemetery - a photo on Flickriver

            This is the saddest cemetery of the many I have visited. With a commanding view of the Mon Valley, from Kennywood to Homestead, it is the final resting place of thousands of immigrants who came here in the late 1800s looking for a better life. But if you look at the dates on many of the grave markers, those lives weren't very long. For most, it was a difficult existence of poverty and hard labor. When they were buried, you couldn't see the view for the smoke from the mills. The mills are gone now and they can rest in peace with only the distant sound of the train whistles as a reminder.

I thought it was interesting how many graves seemed to be clustered around this tree, which was obviously a seedling when these people were buried.  Now the tree has several broken limbs and is shedding debris.  I hope they trim it and don't cut it down.
