Clapton-on-the-hill St James church -114

Clapton-on-the-hill perches on the steep hillside above Bourton-on-the-Water. St James is one of the smallest churches in the Cotswolds seating 45 people. The building is 12th century in origin, the south door, two windows, the chancel arch, an aumbry and the font remain. An inscription on the north abacus of the chancel arch records an indulgence granted to the church, possibly when the abbey church of Evesham was dedicated in 1239.The Lombardic lettering grants an indulgence of 1000 days to visitors to the church who kneel and say the Our Father and Hail Mary three times. Clapton is an attractive Cotswold village clinging to the hillside with spectatcular views of the valley below.
