Withington, made a famous appearance on Time Team, they investigated a Roman site on the banks of the river just outside the village.Later this ancient settlement had a Saxon church probably on the footprint of the present Norman building. Although the existing structure appears Perpendicular in style with an elaborate embattled tower and large Perpendicular windows, the church has two Norman doors and a structure originating in the mid 12th century.The building was altered in the 13th century and a south transept added in the Decorated style. Among the treasures of the church is a beautiful William Morris window depicting St Francis. William Cobbett visited the village in 1826 and wrote: "The village of Withington has a church like a small Cathedral" and the same sense of wonder will accompany your first sight of this magnificent edifice.
