Cardiff 1958 - Baton Relay map

            The first Queen's Baton Relay took place at the Cardiff Games. The silver-gilt baton, manufactured by a Birmingham firm of silversmiths, Turner & Simpson, is decorated with a red dragon, daffodils, leeks and crowns. On 14th July 1958 the baton, containing The Queen's message, left the forecourt of Buckingham Palace carried by Dr Roger Bannister, who was accompanied by Chris Chataway and Peter Driver. The route was modest by today's standards as the baton did not leave British shores, but travelled through several English counties before traversing the Welsh Coast on its way to Cardiff. 

Ken Jones, former Welsh Rugby player and Olympic silver medallist, carried the baton into Cardiff Arms Park stadium, before presenting it to The Duke of Edinburgh who read out The Queen's message (she was unable to attend in person due to her being unwell).

On the culmination of the Games, at the wish of The Queen, both the baton and message were offered by the Organising Committee to the National Museum of Wales, where they are still on display.
