Creeping Charlie

            These cute little flowers (I took this picture with my Raynox macro lens) were blooming all over my lawn this spring. I didn't get a chance to dig into my field guide to ID them until now. Turns out like so many others growing in my lawn, they were an introduced species from Eurasia. Their leaves are round with very characteristic rounded edges and actually quite pretty looking, but they form runners and boy they do spread everywhere! It has tried to grow into my basement by creeping through underneath the door a couple of times.

Turns out they have quite a long list of uses, in particular being used for teas and ales and said to cure headaches, coughs and many other ailments. The leaves contain an aromatic oil that is released when they are crushed. The nectar makes nice honey, so this plant is a good one to have around if you're keeping bees.
