Bridge over the Lancaster Canal, Lancashire

            This canal dates from the 1790s when canals had become the main means of moving heavy goods (and especially coal) around the country. But within a few decades, the railways had arrived and taken over. Canals are now used mainly for leisure purposes. Occasionally, you will see some strange vessels, including the one about to pass under the bridge. This has a distinctly "home-made" appearance.

The Lancaster Canal ends a short distance from here at Tewitfield, where a main road has cut across the canal. To the south, the canal runs to Lancaster and beyond.
