Doors Open | Toronto: Metropolitan United Church

            The original Methodist congregation for York was formed in 1818, completing a small chapel on King Street. In 1833 the congregation completed a larger church on Adelaide, a Georgian-styled building and took the name Newgate Methodist Episcopal Church that could accommodate a congregation of 1,000. It was in 1868 that the current property on Queen Street at McGill Square was purchased, and a new church began construction. Designed by Henry Langley in the Neo-Gothic style, the new church was dedicated as a Wesleyan Methodist Church in 1872. It could fit up to 2400 congregants and earned the moniker Canada's Cathedral to Methodism. A carillon of 23 bells was installed in 1922. The church took the name Metropolitan United Church in 1925 when the United Church in Canada was formed. Tragedy struck when a fire nearly consumed the church in 1928, with only some of the walls and the bell tower surviving the blaze. Using the surviving foundations and the tower the current church rose in 1929. Today, Metropolitan United remains a vibrant and active member of Downtown Toronto.
