Doors Open | Toronto: Cathedral Church of St. James

            The first Anglican parish was founded in 1797 in the town of York. The first wooden frame church was erected on the current site in 1807 and used during the Anglo-American War of 1812 as a hospital in the aftermath of the first battle of York in 1813. A neo-classical stone church replaced the original wooden frame structure in 1833; however, a fire in 1839 destroyed the building. Upon reopening at the end of that year, the church was rededicated as the seat of the Toronto Diocese as a Cathedral. This first cathedral was also destroyed during the Toronto Fire of 1849. Construction of the current cathedral began in 1850 in the Gothic Revival style and using Ohio Stone and local bricks. It opened to worshippers in 1853, although construction of the tower, spire, transepts, pinnacles and finials was not completed until 1874. The cathedral features 12 bells and is only one of nine churches featuring this configuration outside of the British Isles.
