Beaugrenelle (Front de Seine) - a photo on Flickriver

Grennele was an independent commune and was taken over by Paris in 1860 under the direction of Hausmann. In the last century it was the place where the (in)famous Vélodrome d'Hiver was (demolished in 1959). In the early seventies a modern highrise quarter was constructed. In the last 15 years the public spaces and the shopping centre of the quarter began to degrade rapidly. Demographics changed, customers left, shops closed, and the result was a (social) vacuum which created, combined with the ill fitting architecture and public space, an alienating environment. An ambitious program of renovation started a year ago. A 360 dgr pic of the quarter is here
