Song from under the floorboards (Olho de Boi (2))

The industrial buildings depicted here once belonged to the Companhia Portugesa de Pesca (CPP) here.

The company was one of the major fishing companies of Portugal. At its peak it owned 25 ships, employed 700 workers and had extensive cold storage and technical facilities. It even had on site housing (a 'barrio social') for its workers
The companhia was nationalized in 1976 and was dissolved in 1984.

The deserted buildings are now partly owned by the Almada Naval museum and are still abandoned, though some space is used by a few small start-up companies . There still live people in the barrio social (some 16 families). Even some former workers. Most of the people in the previous picture belong to this group of tenants.

The future of them is very unsure. The CPP buildings and facilities are in decay and the powers that be are not yet interested in redevelopment. And the local public utility company is planning to stop supplying the tenants with electricity.

I tentatively added it this pic to my Urban restructuring (World) set since the whole Cais do ginhal stretch is being redeveloped. One of the industrial facilities that will be redeveloped is the Hugo Parry & Sons ship building- and repair workshops. Pics of it on my stream are here and here. The functions to be realized: creative industry, recreational facilities, and facilities for the performing arts.

But the fate of the former CPP facilities at Olho de Bol facilities is yet unknown.
