Bayeux: Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Bayeux

            Bayeux Cathedral

Consecrated July 1077 in the presence of William the Conqueror; Duke of Normandy, King of England.  It was here that William confronted Harold II (last Anglo-Saxon King of England) and forced him to swear an oath of allegiance. Of course as soon as Harold got back to England, he dismissed the oath and had himself crowned king. The next meeting of the two was at Hastings -- and the rest, as they say, is history.

The cathedral was also at one time, the original home of the Bayeux Tapestry (it has since been moved to a museum of its own nearby).
