“First close look at the preselected primary landing site for Viking 2 was obtained June 28 by the Viking Orbiter 1 TV cameras. The area, called Cydonia, is halfway between the equator and the North Pole. Viking 2 will go into orbit around Mars on August 7 with a landing planned for some time in September. These two pictures, taken from a range of about 2050 kilometers (1270 miles), were shuttered 4½ seconds apart at 3:14 p.m. PDT yesterday. On the right edge is the rim of the crater Arandas, about 25 kilometers (15 miles) in diameter. Rocks outcrop on the inner wall, and ejecta--rock material blasted from the crater when it was created by meteorite impact--form a lobate pattern with surface ridges and grooves. Also seen are small pedestal craters that may have been caused by impact and etched out by the wind. Center of the left picture is at 43 N. Lat., 7.6 W. Long.; the right, 42.4 N. Lat., 7.3 W. Long. Each is about 37 by 40 miles.”

Upon analysis of additional imagery provided by Viking Orbiter 2, both this area and the back-up landing site were determined by NASA officials to be too hazardous. A landing site in Utopia Planitia was finally chosen, a third of the way around the planet.
