Vans Beach, south side of Carp (Leland) River

            In recent years the undertow (little or now tide in Lake Michigan, so not truly a rip tide) has led to panic and drowning along this part of the steeply sloped shoreline. Accordingly a locker of rescue equipment is open for use, and signs warning of risk, as well as telling how to move laterally away from the current has been prominently posted. "Whaleback" is the name of the dune in the middle distance of the shoreline and then as the lens moves from south to west the islands of South and then much larger North Manitou come into view before showing the opening to the Leland port and breakwater.
