Of the over 1200 pictures that I took, about 80% are going to become 3-exposure HDR pictures. This is a first one I developed--I am still busy working on some client's work... not enough time to post anything or visit your pictures to comment but I will get there in a day or two!

What you are looking at is 5000 feet below my camera; a salt bed called Badwater Lake in Furnace Creek, which is about 100 miles (160 km) long. There is still some water in it here and there but most of what you see here is salt. In some places the salt is 5 feet (almost 2 meters) deep. The surrounding mountains are tilting up (not straight lifting but are turning up-side-down with each earthquake) and the lake bed is falling down in between. That is one of the reasons why it has not yet filled in with sediments. The other reason is that only 2 inches (about 5 cm) rain falls here a year if at all.. there are years when there is no rain fall at all.

Death Valley is the hottest place on earth; the typical summer temperature is 120F (49C) with the hottest ever recorded at 136F (58C). Now this is air temperature. The ground is 40% hotter than the air there, so on average, the ground temps that the soles of your shoes must withstand is 168F (76C) and on the hottest day was 201F (94C) - you can boil egg on the street... so no barefoot stuff in the Valley! =)

It is the 4th deepest land on the planet, elevation -282 feet at the deepest part, which is where you see the salt on the left sort of greenish-dirty white. There is a salt water creek called Salt Water Spring in which some fish called the Pupfish is still doing well--the plants too live off of salt. Amazing landscape; more pictures soon.

This HDR was taken hand held with Canon 5D Mark II and EF 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with +/- 2EV bracket for the exposures.
