Wismar Wasserkunst on the Market Square

            ENG: The Wismar Water Art is located on the one-hectare market square in Wismar and is considered a landmark of the city. It is a structure designed by the Utrecht master builder Philipp Brandin and functioned on the principle of the running fountain. The implementation of these plans lasted from about 1579 to 1602. The dodecagonal building in delicate stone work was built in the style of the Dutch Renaissance. On the corners, made of limestone, there is a copper hood with a hexagonal lantern.
 
The Hanseatic city of Wismar, with a population of about 42,800, is located on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern at the southern end of Wismar Bay, which is protected by the island of Poel. It is the sixth largest city and the largest of the 18 medium-sized centers of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with a wonderful large historic old town with associated harbor. Here was also our hotel Radisson for our short trip.

GER: Die Wismarer Wasserkunst befindet sich auf dem einen Hektar großen Marktplatz in Wismar und gilt als Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Sie ist ein Bauwerk nach Plänen des Utrechter Baumeisters Philipp Brandin und funktionierte nach dem Prinzip des Laufbrunnens. Die Umsetzung dieser Pläne dauerte von etwa 1579 bis 1602. Der Zwölfeckbau in zarter Steinarbeit ist im Stil der niederländischen Renaissance erbaut worden. Auf den aus Kalkstein gefertigten Ecken befindet sich eine kupferne Haube mit einer sechseckigen Laterne.

Die Hansestadt Wismar mit etwa 42.800 Einwohnern liegt an der Ostseeküste Mecklenburg-Vorpommerns am südlichen Ende der durch die Insel Poel geschützten Wismarer Bucht. Sie ist die sechstgrößte Stadt und das größte der 18 Mittelzentren des Landes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern mit einer wunderbaren großen historischen Altstadt mit dazugehörigen Hafen. Hier lag auch unser Hotel Radisson für unseren Kurztrip.
