Angels, Sibson

Sibson church is set back from the roads in its own quiet enclosure, and is a bit of a surprise, looking a bit different from your average old parish church. St Botolph's (funny how no one is ever christened 'Botolph' these days! ;-) ) is a mixture of dates, styles and even materials, as is immediately apparent on first approaching it. The tower is a handsome Georgian Baroque edifice in stone with a parapet crowned by urns, very much of its time. It's the most obvious indication of the substantial rebuilding of the church in 1726 by an architect called Thomas Moore. The nave was rebuilt at the same time, though less obviously of a piece with the tower considering it is of brick and has rather clumsy Victorian tracery inserted into its round-headed windows, the legacy of a heavy restoration in 1872. Beyond this the chancel of the medieval church remains, giving us an intriguing succession of architectural layers.

Stepping inside through the west door reveals a surprisingly light and spacious interior, considering it is a single vessel without aisles, the nave being much wider than the older chancel beyond. The walls are white rendered throughout, and all the visible windows are clear-glazed (just two side windows in the chancel have Victorian stained glass). The chief items of interest here are at the far end of the church, either side of the altar, the earliest being an effigy of a man holding his heart from c1300, while on the north side is a fine late medieval brass to John Moore with a rare figure of Christ preserved above the main figure.

I'm not sure what normal opening arrangements might be here, but I'm guessing like most it isn't regularly open outside of service times, but we were lucky to find it still open late in the day on Heritage Weekend as it is a rewarding church to visit.
