Interior, Notre Dame - a photo on Flickriver

            The interior of one of the most famous cathedrals anywhere, Notre Dame de Paris. It is a stunning example of early French Gothic and dates largely from the latter half of the 12th century (apparent in the austerity of the interior) whilst the exterior betrays more the embellishment of the following century. 

The cathedral was badly neglected during the Revoultion and needed a thorough restoration in the mid 19th century under the guidance of Viollet le Duc, to whom must be credited much of the cathedral's present appearance.

Unfortunately my shots of the gloomy interior weren't too successful!
