1906 Newspaper photo & European Post Card Company (#2) - Bread Ovens of the Canadian Army Service Corps (C.A.S.C.), at Petawawa, Ontario

Ottawa Citizen - 20 June 1907 (Camp Petawawa) - The wagons form a long line and move past the door of the storehouse and after receiving their boxes of goods, move over to the bakery for the loaves of bread. Thus in about halt an hour all the corps in camp by this excellent system have received their provisions for the day. There are two ovens in use. The large brick stationary oven Is capable of turning out 1,000 pounds of bread to each batch and running night and day would bake about 20,000 pounds of the staff of life in twenty-four hours. The field oven can turn out 2,000 pounds a day. The meat is brought Into the limits alive and each afternoon six oxen die at the hands of the butcher to relieve the appetites of the hungry soldiers.

Lt.-Col. Frederick Minden Cole DSO born 1 August 1859. The eldest son of the late Major Frederick Cole, and Louisa Purkis (Barrett) Cole, of 23, Essex Avenue, Montreal. Husband of Florence Trenholme Cole, of 15, Holton Avenue, Westmount, P.Q. Twice Mentioned in Dispatches, and awarded the Distinguished Service Order during the Great War. Educated at Montreal high school and McGill University, and was head of the firm of F. Minden Cole & Co,. real estate and insurance brokers. Major Frederick Minden Cole stood 5’9″ tall, 165 pounds when examined on 15 June 1915 in Montreal. Joined the 97th Battery, Siege Artillery on enlistment. Transferred to the 1st Canadian Heavy Artillery Group. Embarked Halifax on 22 November 1915. Disembarked Liverpool on 1 December 1915. Lt.-Col. Frederick Minden Cole DSO discharged from the CEF on 12 June of 1918, being Surplus to requirements. Frederick Minden Cole died of cancer at his home, 7 July 1920, and buried in Montreal Mount Royal Cemetery. LINK - cefrg.ca/blog/frederick-minden-cole-dso/

(29 September 1906) - The Artillery Practice Camp, which lasted for six weeks, from the middle of July to the first of September, was under the command of Colonel J. F. Wilson, of Quebec, and under his eagle eye and those of his efficient umpires, every officer and man of all the artillery detachments which came to camp, both field and heavy, received some valuable instruction under service conditions before returning home. The Standard’s illustrations, from photographs taken by Lieut.-Col. F. Minden Cole, will give a good idea of the work which was carried on by the Artillery, and also show the Army Service Corps at one of their necessary duties—namely, bread-making—and the efficient Army Medical Corps at work in their Field Hospital. Some familiar faces will no doubt be seen by nearly every reader of The Standard in the groups which we have reproduced, as the detachments in camp were drawn from Halifax on the East, to Winnipeg on the West. Next year it is expected the tented field will cover twice if not three times the space of the recent camp, as it is the intention to send not only Artillery, but Infantry and Cavalry as well, so that field manoeuvres on a large scale can be attempted.
