Maiko Henshin japanese girl at Sannen-zaka street, Kyoto, Japan

Sannen-zaka Street is my preferred place in Kyoto, especially for the particular animation inside (lots of shops and traditional dressed people). Even some tourists could dress the traditional way here, very nice idea I did not dare to apply since I was alone ☺

That style of make-up is worn by geisha and maiko, it is usually called shiro-nuri (white lacquer) or o-shiroi (which is the name of the white face powder). It is worn by people other then maiko and geisha. For instance, anyone who studies Japanese dance and has dance recitals will probably wear it once or twice a year. It is also associated with Kabuki Theater, where it actually originated, but nonetheless it is heavily associated with geisha. The woman in this picture is a maiko-henshin, someone who has paid to be dressed as a maiko, but she is a really good maiko-henshin!

La petite rue Sannen-zaka est mon endroit préféré de Kyoto. J'y suis passé plusieurs fois sans m'en lasser. Plein de boutiques, un gros cerisier en fleur bien que ce ne soit pas encore la semaine, et plein de monde en kimono et donc beaucoup de japonaises en tenue traditionnelle. Meme les touristes peuvent louer la tenue de fantaisie :)
