Sète is surrounded by water on practically all sides and is therefore also known as the "Little Venice of the Languedoc". The center of the city is the Canal Royal (King's Canal), where many souvenir shops and restaurants are located. Sète's economy is shaped by the port, which, with its trading volume of 3.6 million tons (2005), is second on the French Mediterranean coast after Marseille and eleventh in France overall. The port of Sète serves, among others, fishing (sardines, mackerel and tuna). Sète is the most important French fishing port on the Mediterranean. The morning return of the fishing cutters, accompanied by countless seagulls, gives a unique picture every day. Half of the fish auctioned at the fresh market in the fish auction hall at the Vieux Port, the "Old Port", is sold to the neighboring countries Spain and Italy. The port also serves the export of wine and ferry traffic to North Africa.
