Strv. 141 'Garm' Main Battle Tank - a photo on Flickriver

Named after the hellhound of Norse mythology, the Stridsvogn/Stridsvagn (Strv) 141 ‘Garm’ represents a new generation main battle tank entering service with the NDC’s armored maneuver forces. The Garm main battle tank is built by a consortium of Nordic defence contractors spearheaded by Bofors, Hägglunds, Patria and Kongsberg Defense, and is the result of the joint Nordic ‘Strv 2030 project’ aimed to fulfill the NDC’s member states’ need for a modern main battle tank (MBT) to replace their aging albeit heavily modernized fleets of Leopard 2s.

The new design was going to be domestic, a first for most of the Nordic countries and Sweden rebooting from a three decade long hiatus. Thus, the design teams started by looking back on older AFV prototypes, primarily the domestic design proposal for the Strv 2000 project undertaken during the 1980’s. The prototypes developed in 1984 were designed to counter and defeat the then modern main battle tanks and potential and projected AFV threats that may be faced in the future, although the technology required was immature and largely untested at the time. The Strv 2030 project built further on the evaluations and lessons from the Strv 2000 project, combined with new advancements in tank technology developed during the three decades since, many of which have already been tested and implemented in the Strv 131/Leopard 2N upgrade program. A working technology demonstrator for the new turret and armament system unveiled in 2017 was mounted on a heavily reengineered CV90 IFV chassis, although this was later abandoned in favor of a new tank chassis.
