Menhir de la Cisternette looks down on the Menhir du Coulet

            There are at least four menhirs on the intimate and yet expansive plaine du Coulet on the Causse du Larzac. Three of the four 'look' at each other, with the fourth just out of view. The Menhir de la Cisternette is also known as No.1 de la Plaine du Coulet. It is 3.25m high, 1,35m wide and quite thin. There is a geological scar on the opposite face. It has been sculpted into a 'forme pédonculée'. To the south east of this zone are many, many fallen or standing menhirs (12 or more) and from around five kilometers to the west can be found a cluster that expands out with 20 to 30 menhirs of differing condition. Modern assistance has been offered to this cluster (split and foundation repair) to great reward and every attempt should be made to return these hills to their original standing.

The personification of menhirs into Statue menhirs may have been broad - with the hypothesis that many were adorned with schematic painted lines for seasonal occasion - lines long washed away through storm and freeze. Seen in this light these 'big man' or women seem calm in each others company - keeping an eye on each other and reminding the local people that before a future there is a past. Some, but not all, menhirs are distinctly phallic and one must not dismiss allusions to pride, local fecundity and the human whimsys of exaggeration and even comedy: qualities that may, at times, have been carried via these diverse 'stone figurations'.

The distant menhir (Coulet No 3) is in the form 'ovalaire'. It is 2.30m high.
