TAMKEEN education centre, Daraya, Rural Damascus

            Amongst the ruins of Daraya on the outskirts of Damascus, lies this little oasis for children and youth. Due to Syria’s 12 year civil war much of its education infrastructure has been destroyed and many of its teachers have left or been displaced. What remains is in very poor condition with poorly trained and paid teachers often teaching to classes of 40 plus students. This education centre offers children and youth the opportunity to catch up on the studies they have missed out on - like Arabic, French, Maths and Science - and take courses to help them set up businesses and other vocational training. It also offers children, many of whom have lost one o two parents to the war, a safe space to play, express themselves, and be children. The centre is supported through the TAMKEEN programme funded by SDC and GAC and implemented by AKF.
