Ethiopian Wolf 1

            The beautiful, endemic, Ethiopian Wolf is one of the most critically endangered large mammals in the world with only around 500 left. Formerly found in the Simien region to the north of Ethiopia, it is now believed to exist primarily only in the Bale region of SE Ethiopia where the high (3000 - 4000m) Afroalpine moorland of the Sanetti Plateau provides ideal habitat for the Giant Mole Rats which comprise 40% of its prey. Smaller rodents such as hares, grass rats and carrion also do well here and make up the rest of the wolf's diet.     We were, indeed, privileged to watch this individual at close quarters stalk and, with an elegant, arching pounce, eventually catch a meal.
